Tales of Old Kentucky
I have been writing about the landscape and history of Kentucky for many years. I am a lifelong caver who has been exploring, mapping and studying caves for more than fifty years. I am also interested in water resources, springs and springhouses, environmental issues, horses and equine history, and the history of gunpowder, among other subjects. My work has been published in such respected journals as the Register of the Kentucky Historical Society (6 times), Filson Club History Quarterly (twice), Ohio Valley History (twice), Historical Archaeology and others. I would like to share some of these stories with you on this website; you can download them for free.
Although I very much enjoy writing about horses, my first love, ever since I was a teenager, has always been the exploration and study of caves. I have visited hundreds of caves in Kentucky and other states, and carried out surveys and other projects. While on the faculty at Morehead State University, I shared my knowledge of cave sciences and took students on field trips every year. Below is a picture I took in 2008 of a group of students looking up to the surface, illuminated by the light coming in from the pit entrance into Millers Cave, Rockcastle County, Kentucky.
Below are two of my newest books.

Reinventing the American Thoroughbred: The Arabian Adventures of Alexander Keene Richards
